Ep48: Celebrity Wines: Yay or Nay?

What do you do when you are famous and have more money than God? Buy a winery, of course! More and more, we have been seeing wine with a celebrity behind the label. Some make it pretty obvious that they are the proprietor of the winery (i.e., ACDC’s Highway to Hell Cabernet Sauvignon), while others we would have no idea! With a bottle of 2016 Uncaged Chardonnay by Z. Alexander Brown (or Zac Brown – who knew?!), we get into whether or not celebrities should be taken seriously as winemakers, and who of the ‘who’s who’ is making wine. Is it a Yay or Nay? You might have to try yourself to find out, so grab a bottle of your fave celeb’s wine and listen in!

Ep33: Popping the Bubbly for Royalty

It’s that time of year! Time to celebrate and be merry! And we think that bubbly is a perfect pairing for your holiday and new year’s festivities! And you know who else does? The Queen, of course! This episode we pop open a bottle of Bollinger Champagne (the Queen’s fave!) and discuss the significance of this bubbly beverage with the British Royal family, the difference between sparkling wine and champagne, and what makes them all fun and fizzy! We also get into why we, and the rest of the world, are fascinated with the British Royal Family – and top it all off with what some of their Royal Christmas traditions are. Because, hey – it’s that time of year! Trust us – some will definitely surprise you! So grab a bottle of some Champs (or other sparkling wine of choice), pop that baby open, and get fancy with us!

Ep32: SOMM: The Experience

Your DBP hosts had a memorable evening with the stars! Well, sort of! Last week we had the opportunity of a lifetime to attend the Chicago premiere of SOMM3, the third installment of the documentary series which has brought to light some unique aspects of the wine world. The film brings back some of our favorite folks from the earlier films – and allowed us to take a peek into some private tastings with some of the wine world’s most prestigious peeps: Fred Dame, Jancis Robinson, and Steven Spurrier. As we pop open a bottle from one of the vineyards which took down the French wines in 1976 and in honor of Dame’s “a-ha” wine, hear our thoughts on the film, our “a-ha” wines – including those of the movie’s director Jason, Dustin, and D’Lynn’s which we learned from the screening’s live Q&A session. So much fun and can’t wait to do our own blind tasting!

Ep29: Bone Jolly for Beaujolais

Happy Beaujolais Nouveau Day DBPeeps!! In honor of the official release day for Beaujolais Nouveau, we wanted to revisit this holiday and what it’s all about. What is this Beaujolais we speak of and why is it so special that this youngin’ of a wine deserves its own festival? Could be because it’s a great transition to red for our white wine drinking friends! Listen in to learn how it came to be that the first harvest of the Beaujolais crop across France gained its own holiday. We couldn’t get our hands on Beaujolais Nouveau before its release, so you’ll just have to “suffer” through our TWO Beaujolais/gamay noir wines we’re drinking this episode. It’s go time….it’s Beaujolais Nouveau time! This could be the perfect wine for Thanksgiving. Now pass the wine, bitches!

Ep28: Luxembourg Wines

This week we feature another wine-making country that’s likely not on many people’s radars: the tiny country of Luxembourg! In this episode, your DBP hosts get a little more geeky about wine, as far as varietals, methods, etc. Largely influenced by its neighbors, France and Germany, Luxembourgian wines take on similar flavor profiles while offering something distinctive. Be prepared to hear us butcher a few foreign languages, grab a bottle of wine, and get ready to mentally transport yourself across the pond. Cheers, bitches!

Ep21: A Tribute to Grace & Grenache

In this episode, we pay tribute to some lovely ladies who’ve been inspirational not only to us, but also the world. There’s no better wine we could’ve selected than A Tribute to Grace, a grenache dedicated to the honor of this winemaker’s grandmother, and also the attribute she holds dear to her heart. From Grace Kelly, Princess of Monaco, to Princess Diana and Queen Rania of Jordan, we toast the honorable actions of these graceful women. So grab your bottle, pour yourself a glass, and practice your royal wave as you listen in!

Ep18: Kith and Kin: Who’s In Your Tribe?

Your wealth should be measured by who’s in your community, not by what’s in your wallet. Learn about Dunbar’s number, join us for a mini-book club discussion of Sebastian Junger’s “Tribe: A Book on Homecoming and Belonging,” and hear how our society’s evolution has led us down a path of fewer interactions and meaningful relationships, creating more isolation. Quality over quantity, DBPeeps! As we pop open the 2015 Kith & Kin Cabernet Sauvignon, snuggle up with your favorite tribe member and listen in. #whatreallymatters

What is DBP’s utopia? Wine Country! Though we love it, we know that planning a trip to wine country can seem overwhelming. In this episode, we recount stories and share recommendations from our trips to Willamette Valley, Oregon, and Napa Valley, California – like how to avoid getting too tipsy, how to select your wineries, and how to cut costs – so you can experience wine country like a DBPer, too.
