Ep56: The Experience of Life

Much like the wine we’re pairing this topic with, Experience can lead you to new, uncharted territories. Sometimes good, sometimes bad, more oftentimes scary. Maybe you had a falling out with a friend, maybe you had to move somewhere you’ve never been (ahem, “The Place That Shall Not Be Named”), maybe you live for the unfamiliar! Whichever bucket you find yourself, have you ever considered what you gained from these experiences? In this episode, we take a trip back to reflect more deeply on some of those pivotal moments in your DBP hosts’ lives: becoming less Type A, moving to Milwaukee, a trip to Napa that changed everything. So let the stars align for you, let fear carry you forward rather than hold you back, and tune in. And remember, wine is not just a beverage, it’s an experience!

Ep44: Canada, Climates, and Cru

When you start messing with the fate of wine, your DBP hosts’ most-beloved beverage, you’ve caught our attention. Climate change is no joke and it’s definitely causing a stir for wine-growing regions, especially those niche regions. Will Canada be able to continue making their signature icewine? Will we have to say goodbye to our favorite familiar varietals and welcome lesser-known ones? Will new wine regions pop up that we could have never imagined (Russian wine, anyone)? We don’t know for sure, but we had fun hypothesizing what opportunities and potential changes may be in store. We are definitely not scientists, but we can for damn sure speculate on wine. And we got our hands on a rare treat – a red wine from the only desert in the middle of a country that is 50% frozen: Canada!

Ep40: Assaults on Healthcare Workers: A Shocking Realization

O. M. G. Not only does this describe our wine pairing for this episode, but it also sums up our feelings about recent news! The media has highlighted some recent attacks on healthcare workers – as it should – and we’re shocked by some of the motives behind these attacks and the outcomes! Although healthcare workers are supposed to keep patients safe…who’s keeping them safe? How can they be expected to do their jobs without proper safety and security precautions on work premises? In this episode, we mention a few closer-to-home events that have played out like Grey’s Anatomy episodes, and talk about what more can and should be done to prevent more events like these. Make sure you’ve got a glass of wine in hand when you listen to this one!

Ep30: The Hunter & The Stag

‘Tis the season for bolder red wines and deer hunting! In this episode we’re joined by avid huntsman, Adam, as we explore the ethos of the modern, ethical hunter. Delving into the drive behind the hunt, we discuss the hunter’s responsiblity to the environment, the animal, and the earth, and how the stigma associated with the sport is not reflective of a true huntsman. This isn’t some float off into the woods and have a bonfire type of deal; it requires skill and a specific mindset. Fittingly paired with St. Hubert’s “The Stag” Cabernet Sauvignon, this episode is one that’ll prove insightful for those unfamiliar with the hunting world.

The only way a great wine can get better is with an inspiring story to back it. With a philosophy of winemaking that transcends decades of war, a wine legend is born. In this episode, we explore the story of the Lebanese winery, Château Musar, and the man behind it all – Serge Hochar. Serge continued to pursue quality, organic winemaking throughout a 20 year civil war and only lost 2 vintages.
